Nights are usually the part that breaks a household

Getting up three times to help someone to the bathroom. Listening out through the wall. Lying awake because you know they will be up soon.

Night care puts a trained carer in the house overnight, so the person you look after is safe and you get an unbroken night. For most families it is the single change that makes carrying on possible.

There are two kinds, waking nights and sleeping nights, and the right one depends on how often help is actually needed. We will work that out with you honestly, even when the answer is the more expensive one.

Waking nights and sleeping nights, explained

Most people have not come across this distinction before. It matters, because it changes both the cover and the cost.

If someone is up most nights, a sleeping night will not work and we will tell you so. Booking the cheaper option and being disturbed anyway helps nobody.

A waking night

The carer
Awake and available all night.
Best when
Help is needed most nights, or several times a night.
Through the night
Personal care, repositioning, drinks, settling, monitoring.
What the carer needs
Somewhere comfortable to sit.
Cost
Higher, as the carer is working the whole shift.

A sleeping night

The carer
Sleeps in the home and gets up when needed.
Best when
Help is occasional, and reassurance matters more than hands-on care.
Through the night
Gets up when called, then returns to bed.
What the carer needs
A bed in a separate room.
Cost
Lower.

What night care includes

Your plan is agreed at the assessment and built around what actually happens at night. It usually covers:

  • Support to get to and from the bathroom safely
  • Help with continence care and changing bedding overnight
  • Repositioning and pressure area care where needed
  • Medication support during the night where it is in the care plan
  • Settling routines to help someone get back to sleep
  • Reassurance during confusion, restlessness or distress
  • Drinks and light snacks through the night
  • Keeping an eye on falls risks around the bedroom and landing
  • Laundry and tidying during quiet hours on a waking night
  • A written handover to you or the day carer each morning

Who night care is for

  • At risk of falling

Where getting up alone in the dark is the biggest danger in the house.

  • Living with dementia

Where they wake disoriented, or are more unsettled at night.

  • A carer who has not slept

Where broken nights have gone on for weeks or months.

  • Home from hospital

Where night cover is needed for a few weeks while they recover.

How we deliver night care

  • Honest recommendations

We will tell you if a sleeping night will not be enough, even though it costs you more.

  • The same carers

Consistent faces, which matters more at night than at any other time.

  • Written notes every morning

So you know what happened while you were asleep.

  • A few nights or every night

Start with the nights you find hardest and change it as things change.

  • Local team

Derby based, covering Derbyshire and Staffordshire, with a coordinator you can reach.

What a typical night looks like

Your carer arrives at the agreed time, has a quick handover, and helps with the evening routine so bedtime happens the way it normally does.

Through the night they are there for whatever is needed. Trips to the bathroom, a drink, a change of bedding, or simply a familiar voice when someone wakes not knowing where they are. On a waking night they stay up. On a sleeping night they go to bed and get up when called.

In the morning they help with getting up if that is part of the plan, then hand over to you or the day carer with a written note of how the night went.

The morning after

The point of night care is not really the night. It is what the next day feels like when you have had eight hours.

Every morning you get a written note of how the night went: how often they were up, whether anything was different, and anything worth mentioning to the GP. Patterns show up quickly in those notes, and they are often the first sign that something has changed.

If a run of nights has gone well and you want to reduce the cover, say so. Night care is not something we expect families to keep forever.

Common questions about night care

What is the difference between a waking and a sleeping night?

On a waking night the carer is awake and available all night. On a sleeping night they sleep in the home and get up when called. Which suits depends on how often help is actually needed.

What hours does a night shift cover?

Usually nine to ten hours, commonly 10pm to 7am, and we agree the exact times so they fit the household's routine.

Can we book just a few nights a week?

Yes. Many families start with the two or three nights they find hardest, then adjust.

What does a sleeping night carer need?

A bed in a separate room. On a waking night they only need somewhere comfortable to sit.

What if my mum is up most nights?

Then a sleeping night will not work and we will recommend a waking night, rather than have you pay for cover that does not do the job.

Can night care be combined with daytime visits?

Yes, often. Some families use morning and evening visits with night cover, others live-in care with night care alongside.

How quickly can night care start?

Often within a day or two, sometimes sooner after a discharge. Call us with the timescale and we will be honest about what is possible.
